TRANSCRIPT OF THE SHOW
Hi, and welcome to the Made for Greatness podcast. I’m your host Sterling Jaquith, and today on episode 81, we are talking about three important questions to ask during prayer. I recently listened to a podcast episode by Father John Ricardo, who I love. My favorite priest podcast is his podcast. And I will link this episode up for you. He is talking about these three questions greatly in the context of parishes. He talks about families a little bit, mostly parishes, and this is the work that his ministry does. He was a diocesan priest for a long time, and now he runs a program where they go and they train priests, basically how to be more effective in parishes. And so they were doing some of this work before, but he describes that they’ve kind of taken it to this next level. And it was so powerful and it convicted me so much that I thought, you know, I just wanna do an entire episode on these three questions.
And so the first question, something that you ask in prayer, but ideally in adoration is going to God with a physician’s mindset. I love this analogy of going in with a physician’s mindset and saying, Lord, I want you to show us the biggest wound that needs to be healed. And then in your mind kind of picturing like an x-ray or a diagnostic tool and being really open to hear what the Lord has to say. And they even talk about how you have to have the mindset that God speaks to us. And this is so important to me and my work. If I could sum up the work that I wanna do it’s to teach people that they can discern the will of God and they can let the holy spirit run their family and their business, the parish. And so this group often talks about how parish is, you know, the parish council will get together with an agenda and they might even pray, but they pray asking God to bless their agenda. And instead he’s saying, we’ve gotta flip that around. We’ve gotta go to adoration as a parish team or as a family. And we have to ask God to tell us what the agenda is to tell us what the work is. And my husband and I pray for our kids, but this was just a slightly different flavor where we would pray. We would go to adoration together and we would pray about Rosemary. And we say, Lord, we’re trying to shepherd Rosemary’s heart. Show us any wounds that need to be healed. Show us the biggest wound that needs to be healed and really just listen. And then you come out of adoration and either with your team or with your spouse, you say, what did you hear? What do you think? What do you think is the most important, but what did you hear from God? And I will tell you one of the biggest gifts of this mindset work was it has absolutely transformed my relationship with the Lord. And I hear him all the time. Now. I just believe that he speaks to me and I listen. And I don’t always love what he says. You guys, sometimes he says things where I’m like, ah, Shucks, that’s not what I wanted. That wasn’t the answer I wanted. That wasn’t the timing that I wanted. I would like more clarity, please. Sometimes I hear him say, wait, not now, But I hear it clearly. And so I love this idea of, with your husband saying, what’s the agenda for our family this year or this summer, And taking into the Lord and saying, show us a wound that needs to be healed and be really open to hearing him. He is the heavenly physician. And I don’t talk a lot about The Made for Business. Part of Made for Greatness. So made for business is the arm of our business that does business coaching. And I really teach women that you can let the holy spirit run your business. You can trust him and you can talk to him and you can hear his voice. And it’s so interesting because I created this challenge called market like an evangelist challenge. And one of the things that I have you do is post somewhere on social media or in a different place. If you don’t use social media a hundred times in 30 days, and then I have you take notes and I call them heavenly physician notes, because God is the heavenly physician. He wants to heal us. And so you can do this in your business. You can do this in your family. If you work at a Catholic organization, you can bring this to them Where everyone prays preferably in adoration. But if not, that’s fine. And they go in asking the Lord, what is the greatest wound? What do you want us to work on? Then the second question and this I thought was very interesting is asking the Lord. So this would be a separate session. You’d go back into adoration in a separate session with this question on your heart, which is Lord show us the devil’s game plan. And father Ricardo was saying, the devil has a game plan to thwart your plans and God’s plans. He doesn’t want us to win. He wants to create confusion and to show evil. And God doesn’t want that. God wants us to be healed. God desires his holy plans even more than we do. And he will tell us. And so we can go into prayer and say, Lord , reveal to me the way that the devil is planning to wreck my plans. And it was so interesting because I was thinking about it in terms of my family. I was like, what is the biggest threat to my family right now? What would be the cleverest thing that the devil would do? And I actually didn’t spend a ton of time thinking about it because I thought, well, I’m just gonna go to adoration and ask God, and he’s gonna tell me, and I wanna do the same thing about my business. God has asked Larissa and I to build a very large business, right? And we wanna reach 10,000 Catholic moms and teach them to manage their lives, their minds, and to learn how to walk closely with the holy spirit. That is a big goal. And my guess is right after we hit 10,000, we’re gonna try for a hundred thousand. And so you better believe the devil is mad about that. And he does not want us to complete those plans. And he’s very clever. So he’s not going to throw regular things in our way And we’ll be sneaky. And so, you know, we wanna take our business before the Lord and say, Lord reveal to us the devil’s game plan. So we have a response ready, or we can be prepared for it and we could be strong against it. And then the third question and a third session for this would be to pray that God gives you the game plan for doing what he wants. They called it a General’s mindset. Going in like a general and saying, all right, Lord, what’s the battle plan. So the first question is really identifying where the work that Lord is calling you to the wounds that he wants you to heal? The second one is about, Hey, how is the devil gonna try to upset those plans and get in the way And really upset the mission. And then the third one is, so what are we gonna do about it? And I love this idea of doing it for each one of your children. I love this idea of doing this for your family as a whole. I think this would be a really beautiful thing to do either right before advent. So at the start of the Catholic new year, you kind of had a mission plan for your family or doing it during advent. I think advent is such a lovely time of reflection. It can be. And for those of you that work in a parish, when you start running a parish like this and you ask God what he wants, it’s very different. It’s very different from how most parishes are run. And this priest, he did this in his parish in Detroit, completely transformed the parish And then went on to create this program, which is free, where he and his team go. And they basically train parish teams and pastors how to do this. Now, these three questions were slightly new. You know, they’ve been, they’ve been teaching them how to go to the Lord and ask for the agenda. They’ve been doing that for the last two years. And so I just really, immediately, I heard this podcast and I came to my office and I thought, I wanna share this with you. I was so moved by it. We’ll link it up in our show notes. If you wanna hear their version of it, he talks about, um, some scripture in the Old Testament about how God will reveal the enemy’s plans to us so that we can overcome them. And I just believe so deeply in God’s goodness and his faithfulness. And I know so many of you are struggling in your prayer life. You’re kind of phoning it in. And I want you to just be curious about why, why are you mad at the Lord? Why do you feel distant from him? Why are you turned away from his face? It’s okay. Think the first thing we have to do is have acceptance of where we are and awareness of it. So if you’re shaming yourself and guilting yourself over that, you’re not going to find out what’s going on. So if you’re struggling in your prayer life, you’re not praying for your kids. If you’re not praying for your marriage and your family or your job or your business, I want you to just be in acceptance over that, Hey, this is where I’m at right now. My prayer life is pretty stale or I’m pretty mad at God, or I just don’t trust that guy right now, whatever you think and feel he already knows, and he can handle it. But I’m telling you, if you can repair that part of your life, If you can repair your relationship with the Lord, and he’s always standing by ready to do that, And you can learn how to begin to hear his voice, You will change it will change your life. He may ask you to do hard things, but you guys, when the Lord asks us to do hard things, we feel conviction. We are willing to walk through the fire and the world feels topsy turvy right now. And people are so angry and it’s such a divisive place out there that we need to feel like God is in our corner. But so often we go to prayers and we say, Lord, I want this and this. And can you help me with this and this kid and help me and this and this, We bring the agenda. And we say, can you just bless this agenda that I came up with? And I imagine him sitting there with a soft smile. Going, that’s not what you need love. I know what you need. And if you would be quiet and if you would ask me, I will tell you, I’m going to be hosting a workshop next week, May 26th, 27th, and the 28th, that’s gonna be an hour each day. Of course it will be recorded and I’ll send it out each day. And the workshop is called how to work with kids at home. And at first I thought it was just gonna be for the made for business crowd, the women who own or are growing businesses. But then it occurred to me that so much of what I’m teaching is really applicable for anyone who works from home or anyone who’s struggling to get home, making things or homeschooling things done with kids at home. I’m gonna talk about how to notice when you’re having a fear response at your children. I’ll tell you one way that that shows up is you’re trying to get something done. They interrupt you and you snap at them because you feel guilty about what you’re doing. You think you should be present with your kids all the time. They have access to you all the time. You can’t ever seem to get anything finished. I’m gonna teach you how to make that world better. I have been working from home for a long time with six little kids. Even now, they are 11 to two that are still on the low end. And I will tell you my tricks for making sure they don’t get out of their beds until 7: 45. If I wanna work in the morning for streamlining meals. And I have a few ideas that are not just what my family does, but what some other families do. I’m gonna teach you how to know which things to let go and which things require training. We’re gonna talk about how to get things done, How to know that what’s important to you is worth it. And I think I’m gonna add this in which is to ask the Lord what he thinks is important. And then we’re gonna just be obedient. So the workshop is focused on how to work with kids at home. So I originally designed it for women who are entrepreneurs and trying to grow a business home. But the more I worked on it, the more I thought, goodness, I think home moms could benefit from this. It’s free. I want you to go to madeforgreatness.co. And if you’re on a computer, you’ll see a bright green banner at the top that says focused. Um, if you’re not on your computer, then you have to click on the business page and then you’ll see a link to the focused workshop. And if you follow up my business account on Instagram at made for business coaching, there’s a link there in my bio. And I will send out a link with the email that goes out with this podcast. So if you’re not on our email list, you should be on our email list. I was just writing about how our email list has been known to change lives. Every week I ride out an email, I just pray. I’m like, Lord, what do they need to hear? Sometimes I’m feeling sweet. Sometimes I’m feeling a little sassy and I send you guys an email And every week somebody replies and says, that’s exactly what I needed to hear this week. Thank you. I was praying about that. And that is why I love working for the Lord. And that is why I love walking with the holy spirit. And If you wanna learn how to do that in your business, come join Made for Greatness. Come join masters. We have a full business program there. We do weekly business coaching and I will teach you how to feel safe, make money, how to not feel guilty working when your kids are home and how to really know that God is calling you to business. And I kind of think everybody should come to this workshop. It’s gonna be amazing. And then when it’s done, I’ll put it in masters. So everybody will have access to it then. And I just wanna help you guys love your day to day lives. I don’t want you to have that pulling your hair out, feeling nobody’s listening to you and you can’t get anything under control when you can’t finish anything. God does not want us to live like that. And Larissa and I have all the tools you need to stop living like that. I was just enjoying my life today. It was just an average day, but I was just enjoying it so much. And I thought, man, I did not feel that way three years ago. And I just know now how to ask for what I want and manage my mind, enjoy the parts of the kids that I want to and not feel bad about not doing the things I don’t want to with them and communicating with them. So calmly and lovingly, and I can teach you guys how to do that. The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were Made for Greatness.
