TRANSCRIPT OF THE SHOW
Welcome to the Catholic Mom Calm podcast, where you come to find peace and hope in this wild and beautiful journey of motherhood. Today I want to talk about how the food in the United States is pretty poisoned, and we’ve known that for a while and it’s causing a lot of stress. And I think in a lot of ways, stress is more dangerous than food. So I wanna break that down today.
So RFK Jr. Came out and spoke at a Trump event. I didn’t see it. I just heard that he did. And he said, hey, the food supply is totally corrupted. The food is poisoned. You should watch this interview with Tucker Carlson. Now I realize that Trump things and I think to some extent, Tucker Carlson things would be considered perhaps Republican and conservative. This is just not about politics at all. It was about food.
And Tucker Carlson interviewed a brother and a sister. The woman is a medical doctor and the brother had, I think, an Ivy league MBA. So he’s in business learning about big business and lobbying and ends up getting to see. Behind the scenes of corporate food and the money that goes into that. And the funding that goes into nutritional studies.
She’s a doctor and she realizes that in medical school and after, as they practice, they are really taught to just treat symptoms. It shouldn’t be news to most people. Like most people, I feel like in 2024, Have an idea that the medical system is not super great and the food isn’t great, but I think. that they did an excellent job in this interview with Tucker Carlson of really breaking down why. And one of the most interesting things, and I did not know this. But they talk about how the tobacco companies, when it tobacco companies began to fall out of favor. And I don’t remember what decade that was. I want to say maybe 60, 70, 80, somewhere around there. What they did was realize, like, oh, they’re going to kind of ban cigarettes.
I mean, you could have cigarettes, but they came out and surgeon general and said, Hey, this is really bad for you. When that happened, then they went and bought up a bunch of the major food companies. And then they took the scientists who were trying to make cigarettes so addictive and they moved them over into the food.
And so since that time, our food has gotten more and more chemical based. And has been designed to really just mess with your brain so that you are addicted to it. I saw a community the other day making jokes about how Europeans come to America and they kind of get addicted to Doritos. I tried to read those for the first time and it’s, they just had this insane reaction to Doritos, but we know now that they have scientists who are designing the food to hit the pleasure centers of the tongue and the grain. At such a high level that you really crave these foods.
And we see this in pretty much, most packaged foods. And then what comes to mind to me, it’s Oreos and Doritos. And those kinds of like, I want to say kiddish foods that we as adults still really crave. The other thing I saw recently was a picture of the ingredients of what was in a Reese’s peanut butter cup. I think in the eighties versus now, and in the eighties you could read all the ingredients and you knew all those words meant. And then they showed the one now and it just had all of this stuff in it. All this extra stuff and all these words that I didn’t know how to pronounce, and I didn’t know what they meant.
And we know that this is mostly at least, I think the worst in America. Because when you go to Europe, people say all the time, when I go to Europe, I stop being sick, I could eat the bread. I could have a dairy. And a lot of the things that we eat are banned. In other countries, other countries are like, no, you can’t have that, it’s terrible for you. So as this interview came out and I’ll link it in the show notes, you guys can go check out that interview with Tucker Carlson and Casey, Casey and Kelly. That was the name of the two of the brother-sister pair.
A lot of people have been talking about this interview and talking about food. And I’m feeling a lot of stress around the food. And one of the things that I say often on this podcast is that modern day parenting is still challenging and I think this is one of the ways. I think this is one of the ways modern day parenting feels confusing and dangerous and stressful.
Because now you don’t even know what to feed your kids. It’s paralyzing to think about, oh, no, the food is all poisoned and you know, the number of auto-immune things and kids on the spectrum and infertility, like all these helpings feels really scary. But I wanted to take today to talk about how there have always, always, always been really scary things.
What is not unique to the year 2024 is that there were dangerous things in the world that could hurt your children. Even if we just go back to the fifties, first of all, the significant amount of people who were drinking alcohol all the time and smoking cigarettes. And the amount of people that were around cigarette smoke getting cancer from that because so much. And then there was a specimen in everything and lead in everything. I mean, they used to have led billings and people’s teeth. And now they know that lead is very, very bad but these just put lead fillings in people’s sleep, that was just in the fifties.
If we keep going back then people die of things like polio. And a lot of. Sicknesses that we now cure with antibiotics. I think it was Dale Carnegie, who was, you know, one of the richest men who ever lived. And one of his kids died of something that was totally curable today. So God does not give us a spirit of fear. He does not want us walking around in gripping, fear and panic. When you start becoming very scared and very obsessive. You’re not going to show up as the mom, you want to be. You will not. If you are trying to figure out what to feed your family, you are coming from this place of panic, fear, overwhelming shame, guilt. The way that you are going to show up with your kids is not going to be great. God calls us to be at peace in our lives.
He wants us to surrender these lives to him and to be at peace. At peace does not mean calm and happy all the time. It means this is where we’re at right now and this is okay. And that’s how I feel about the food. We try to limit how much white sugar our kids eat and I don’t panic about it. And when they go to mass on Sundays, they have a donut, which I don’t like. I watch it every Sunday. Every kid at our church has a donut. I don’t like it. Donut they’re made of terrible things. And it’s also just, okay.
There. will always be dangerous things in the world, poisonous things in the world. We were not made for this world. This world would have been a perfect, beautiful paradise if it wasn’t for the fall and original sin. But now we have a toxic world. It’s going to continue to be toxic and it always has been. Now I think, hundreds and hundreds of years ago, I mean, it really was war and poverty and disease that was so dangerous. But even back then as a Christian, you had to wake up and give your day to the Lord and say, this is what we’re dealing with right now. These are the cards.
And I’m not suggesting that we stick our head in the sand and not pay attention to anything, but you know, the difference. You know, the difference in your body. Between panic and freaking out which will show up. With you being snappy and weird, maybe judgmental or shaming your kids? Like, are you going to eat that? I can’t believe you eat that. I thought I taught you about what’s in those kinds of things.
That is not what you want my friend, you want to create a deep connection with your kids and you, want to lead them to the heart of Jesus. And you can do that by eating chemicals, Oreos and Doritos that have been made to add it the heat. And I’m not suggesting that we all run out. And buy a bunch of processed food and go see lovey. It is what it is. We’re going to just eat this because it doesn’t matter.
I think it requires intentionality and peace in your heart. We try to make swaps like we’re eating one thing and then we go, huh? That thing isn’t probably great. Let’s try swapping it out for something that’s healthier. And we do that slowly over time. So that the rhythm of our family begins to eat better and better food which for us means, you know, less white, sugar, less processed food. But I am not obsessed with it and I know a lot about this stuff, right. And I’ve known about this for a long time, but I just don’t obsess over it. I don’t let it steal my peace. I don’t panic. I don’t want to rip my heart.
And first of all, I just, I want to say that does happen. I just coach myself down. And so for sure, I have those initial feelings like what the donut at mass. And I’m like, Ooh, just deep fried in vegetable oil, which is just the worst. And then I just go, it’s fine. It’s not a salvation issue. And I want to put my effort into teaching the kids about Jesus more than I want them to only eat food that we grew in a garden. I just, I don’t want a stressful home. I don’t want to be a stressful mom. I don’t want to be sharp with them. And that, by the way, is one of the reasons why we don’t garden. We live on five acres and I could very easily garden, but I watched the people who garden and it takes a significant amount of time, like, uh, just so much time.
And I think it takes a lot of money too, with the boxes and the things I don’t know. It just seems like it takes more money than you think. And then you end up with really kind of a small amount of food that lasts for a short period of time. I haven’t seen that people with gardens are, it’s not replacing a significant amount of their grocery shopping. Which is fine if you love gardening, absolutely go do it. But in terms of spending time with my kids and homeschooling them and having this business that I have. I just, I don’t value gardening enough to do it. I know that it would create too much stress for me. And then I would be snappy with the kids about taking care of the garden.
And I don’t want to do that. So, yes. The food is poisoned. Government probably corrupted both sides. Technology, we’re figuring it out. It’s only been a very short time that we’ve had. Phones on the internet, our pocket all the time. It’s messing with our minds. We’re not really sure. What are the long-term effects of that? It’s going to be. But we’re navigating it. But every single decade in history has poisonous and dangerous things. And every Christian has the same call which is to love the Lord, with all your heart and all your mind and all your soul. I think we want to have some level of awareness about the things that are happening around us but not so much that it steals our peace.
So if you are just holding it together right now, trying to keep these kids alive and you are feeding them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with off-brand peanut butter that has sugar and hydrogenated oil in it. And jam that’s like a tiny bit of berries, but mostly just weird other stuff and sugar and you are happy, peaceful, mom. And you pray with your kids and. you show them why we believe in Catholicism. I think you’re doing a great job.
I don’t want us to lose our minds over the food thing. I just want to collectively hug all the moms right now and just say, in my opinion, It is pretty hard to make decisions and be a parent in 2024. Because of all of this stuff, food stuff, the internet stuff, just the sheer amount of information that’s floating around. Your parents, their parents, and all the parents before then did not have to think about all of these things. Now, I think that they had way more physical safety issues or disease.
They had to surrender that to the Lord, just like we have to surrender this food stuff to the Lord. And I want to invite you to be honest with yourself. You know, if you are mismanaging your time. And grabbing McDonald’s three nights a week, let’s work on that. Work on looking at your calendar and finding some more space there. Maybe the rest of your life is the thing that is so stressful. We can work on that too.
God wants us to receive the day that he’s given us with peace. I just received it. That’s what Mary did, she just went, okay, this is the day I’ve got right now, praise be the name of the Lord. And within our day, we can make decisions that lead us towards God. We cannot have lives that are free of risk or danger. We have to surrender that to the Lord. I want to call all of us into being really good stewards of this one life we have. And to me, being a really good steward of life means keeping your stress levels down and walking closely with the Lord. And what’s crazy is when I do that.
I make better food choices for me and the kids anyway because I am not so stressed out. So I think it’s really great that this interview came out. I think it’s great that more people are talking about the injustice of the American food system. Like it really feels like it’s evil and it’s been done to us and you shouldn’t have to work so hard to eat healthy food but I don’t think that we should all lose our minds and feel stressed and overwhelmed and panicked about this. I think we just go what’s the best choice we can make today.
What’s a choice that can fit into our overall lives with the overall responsibilities that we have. Maybe we’re going to swap out the peanut butter and one that doesn’t have hydrogenated oil. Like one tiny thing and we’re going to keep making tiny decisions like that until we our eating slightly better food. I love you. Where are you, good mom? You are doing a good job. You do so much stuff for these kids. And you love them so much. Give them the gift of you. A little mom who is not anxious and stressed out walks closely with Jesus. And just tell yourself there is always danger. My job is to surrender the day to the Lord.
Our hope is in the Lord. Freedom is in the Lord. And our peace comes from the Lord. So, yes. We are all Peter on the water than what is storming around us isn’t great. It doesn’t matter. We can just look at the face of Christ and know that we are okay. You are okay. All right my friends. I’m praying for you. Please pray for me. Thank you so much for listening and have a blessed day.

![Anxiety never comes from the Lord. So the second I feel that tightness show up in my chest, I already know something true about myself. I am thinking about my life in a way that God does not want me to think about it. Period. Because if I were thinking about it the way He wants me to, I would be at peace. This episode is one question I want you to start asking faster than you are asking it right now. Not "Lord, take this away," but "Lord, what do you want me to know about this?" About this toddler. About my husband. About my body. About this house. I asked Him something this morning and He said, "You already know. You just doubt what I have already told you." Ooh, burn, Lord. We talk about why we are not reaching for Him sooner (we do not actually believe we could be at peace all the time), the grace you have to ask for before He hands it to you, what Fulton Sheen was doing in basically every talk he ever gave, and why Daniel in the lions' den and Mary at the foot of the cross were both at peace. WHAT WE COVER IN THIS EPISODE: The micro moment prayer: the second you notice tightness, throw your hands up and say "Lord, I invite you into this. Come be with me right now." Why anxiety is information and not a verdict. It tells you your thinking is off, not that your life is off The real reason we do not run to Him faster: we have never met a person who is at peace all the time, so we quietly decided it is not available to us Eight out of ten minutes. You will lose it. The win is how fast you come back Feeling powerless is the worst feeling there is, and being able to stay calm in any situation is one of the most powerful You are not done when you hear the sentence. Your job is to practice it, or your brain will spiral right back in two hours The gifts of the Holy Spirit were designed to be asked for. Wisdom, counsel, knowledge, understanding, fortitude, fear of the Lord. Ask Being at peace does not mean being peaceful. It means receiving. It means "this is okay right now and I can handle it" The surprise pregnancy test, the teenager going through it, the adult child who left the Church. You can be at peace today, in that EPISODE TIMELINE: (estimated at 5-minute marks, no timestamps in the transcript, confirm against audio) [00:00] – Hope when you feel anxious, trapped, stuck or frozen, and inviting the Lord into the micro moment [05:00] – "Lord, what do you want me to know about this?" ![I am team planning. I am team house systems. We teach it in the membership and it is the very first thing we tackle in the Catholic Mom Reset, because looking at your next 90 days and making a plan is genuinely a gift to your future self. But if you took all of it away tomorrow, dropped me in a different house in a different town with no idea what the next 90 days held, I would be okay. I could walk around and have peace. That is the part I want for you. A lot of women tell me they are type A planners. There is a healthy version of that. There is also a version that gets built in a childhood full of chaos you could not control, or in a home where performing well was how you got love and attention. Both of those grow up into a woman who plans beautifully, and one of them is holding on with an iron grip. This episode is how to tell which one you are running on, the five minute healing work that sets the grip down, and the sentence I said to a mom on a coaching call that changed her whole face. WHAT WE COVER IN THIS EPISODE: Why the plan is not what makes you feel calm (you make a plan, then you think "I have a plan," and the thought is what creates safety in your body) The two childhoods that produce a hyper-planner: chaos you had no control over, and love you had to earn by performing The difference between planning that feels light and playful and planning you believe you cannot survive without Abraham walking up the mountain and the Israelites who never got the itinerary, and what peace looked like for both Tolerating uncertainty is a capacity you can grow, the same way a kid grows from 37 seconds to a minute and a half underwater The five minute memory work I use, sitting in the theater with the Lord while He tells you the truth about what really happened What I told the mom who was afraid that moving every two years would rob her kids of roots and stability EPISODE TIMELINE: [00:00] – Why I wanted to do this episode, and why I am solidly team planning and team systems [05:00] – All brains hate uncertainty, the AI conversation nobody can predict, and the skill we can actually grow [10:00] – Your body feels your thinking, not your plan. The Israelites, and Abraham on the mountain [15:00] – The car breaks down. The husband's job might move you. How to answer your own brain [20:00] – Chaos versus performance, the grounded healthy version of you, and asking the Lord what we are doing today [25:00] – Bob Schuchts, inner child work, and revisiting a memory with Jesus in five minutes [30:00] – "You are their mom. !["People love change. They just hate transition." I heard Matthew Kelly teach that years ago and I think about it every single August. Because right now I'm getting a hundred emails from the school, two of my boys walked out today in socks with giant holes in the heels, and there's a lunchbox in this house that will not zip. If your body is fritzing out over start dates and supply lists and shoe sizes, nothing has gone wrong. You're not in the change yet. You're in the transition, and I want to give you the exact words to say to your own brain while you're standing in the middle of it. Plus a summer update: our little red golden retriever, the sickness that took my husband down, walking in 87 degrees on purpose, 200 Fulton Sheen rosaries, and the press-on nails I just ordered off an internet ad. WHAT WE COVER IN THIS EPISODE: Why change and transition are two different things, and why the yucky feeling belongs to the transition and not to your decision What to tell your brain when it starts second-guessing (the feeling is bad, so the choice must be wrong) and why that's backwards Who you are in a transition is not who you're going to be, whether that's back-to-school or pregnancy or a move you didn't choose The two weeks plus two weeks rhythm I use: get ready, live it, evaluate at the end of the day, tweak, then settle into the change Giving equal air time, because your brain will spend all day on what could go wrong and about nine seconds on what you're excited about The folder-and-calendar hack that keeps the school email avalanche from hanging over you every hour of the day Looking for what was good in a hard season, even when the good thing is just the timing of it EPISODE TIMELINE: [00:00] – Mid-August, the nesting itch, and going from wild open summer to ordered fall [05:00] – Annie Avonlea, a sickness that hit everyone one at a time, and what was actually good about it [10:00] – Walking in the heat on purpose, France prep, and giving equal air time to the excitement [15:00] – Making Fulton Sheen rosaries, why moms need work that gets finished, and yes, the press-on nails [20:00] – "People love change. They just hate transition." The emails, the socks, the lunchbox that won't zip [25:00] – Talking to your brain in the transition, and the four weeks it actually takes to settle [30:00] – The email folder hack, and having peace today in the middle of all of it LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED: Join the Catholic Mom Reset: www.catholicmomcalm.com/reset Calm Catholic Kids: https://calmcatholickids.com Fulton Sheen beatification conference: https://fultonsheenconference.com/ CONNECT WITH STERLING JAQUITH ON INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/catholicmomcalm](https://catholicmomcalm.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/CMC_Podcast_Ep_271_11-1-300x300.png)
