TRANSCRIPT OF THE SHOW
Today, we’re going to be talking about when gratitude feels. Blocked. And this episode is going to come out the day before Thanksgiving. So you might be busy. You might not hear this until afterwards, but I’m lying to make a short episode. For those of you that are having a hard time. Because I think what happens is around Thanksgiving, we get this flood of emails. That are poetic and lovely and talk about gratitude and giving thanks to the Lord and like counting our blessings and looking around you.
And when you’re having a hard time, That’s a difficult message to take it. Especially when you’re pelted with a hundred of them.
Like you should just be so happy. You have it so good.
And. Even though I think.
That we should always get to gratitude is the punchline. I think it’s okay to have different feelings first. And a lot of times we actually need to process those other feelings to even reach for gratitude. So in addition to whatever you’re going through and it may not even be a big life hard thing, it might just be the every day. Busy-ness and chaos of life. You might not be feeling. Very. Grateful you might not even want to.
You may not be in the mood. It’s like pull out the list and think about how wonderful everything is and you’ll know because there’ll be kind of like a sassy teenager inside of you. Who’s like, no, I don’t want to do that. Don’t make me do that. I’m not ready to do that.
And really, I just want you to imagine. If there was an adult or a parent in your life who is like, oh, young lady, you will. You will sit down and you will write your grateful list right now.
It feels terrible.
So we have this rebellious feeling inside of us, but then we also have shame because we’re like, what’s wrong with me? Why can’t I feel grateful right now. Why am I resisting this so much? We know. That it shouldn’t be like that.
Okay, but finger wagging your way. To feeling grateful is not.
I think the best strategy. So first, I just want to say, I love you. Wherever you’re at in your life right now. But good things. The hard things, the beautiful things, all of it. Like it’s just, oh, Kay. You are okay. You are lovable. You are good.
You are handling it. Right now.
She’s like take a deep breath and let your shoulders kind of drop and just be like, yeah. I am. Okay. I am handling it.
Whatever I’m feeling is valid right now.
We’re not going to talk you out of it. We’re not going to force you to smile.
There’s a long history of the world telling women to be quiet and put on a nice dress and smile.
We’re just not going to do that today.
I want to validate. That. For most moms, a disproportionate amount of the work of taking care of kids during a break. Or preparing for Thanksgiving falls on moms. It is a lot.
And so while a lot of moms are running their Olympic X. Of homemaking.
You’re going to get all these emails that are like, you should be grateful. And it just feels jarring. It can feel jarring.
And so if you’re one of these moms, that’s. Making three pies and cleaning everything and hosting people or traveling. Or you’re lonely. Kids are gone. Maybe you don’t have a lot of extended family. There’s a million reasons to feel feelings other than gratitude.
Before on Thanksgiving. And I want you to feel. Your feelings. I want you to process them out, sit with yourself. Like you would sit with a child and just say, tell me how you’re feeling. Just tell me everything.
Just listen to her. Yeah, that sounds like a lot. That sounds difficult. I see, I see you.
And if you want to, you can imagine doing that with the Lord. You can imagine sitting with Jesus or climbing into the lap of God, the father, which I always just pictured. It’s just like this giant white being, but I only see the bottom half of him, so like a climb in his lap, but I don’t even see the top half of him.
Cause he’s so big. And I feel so loved and I feel so safe and I’m like, oh, Father.
It’s hard. Having a hard time. And I just tell them all the things. And he is so happy to sit there and listen.
And when you really do that, when you really give yourself over to what you’re feeling, and we’re not spinning, we’re not chewing and ruminating, you’re not getting more upset or more sad. We just really say out loud or in your mind how you’re feeling and why.
And you bring the Lord in. You’re just going to come back to this place of peace.
This place of acceptance. This is what happens. This is what’s happening right now. This is where I’m at.
And that’s okay.
And I really love to tell the Lord, I will, I will do this.
If you were calling me to this, they will be done. I will do it.
And usually from that place. Then we can. Pick our head up and look around and go.
I do see. I see the goodness of God.
I see that he has. Limited the bad things. He has protected me, even in the hard things.
I see the love around me. I see the blessings.
But we do it from this place of really feeling grateful, not because someone told us to write a list and someone forced us into it and someone didn’t acknowledge. What was happening first?
And, you know, imagine that you. Had a daughter who just. Went off to college and had a really bad breakup. And she came home for Thanksgiving and you were like, oh, well, what are you grateful for?
You wouldn’t probably do that. You would just meet her, where she was at and you would hold her heart and you would sit with her and you would let her cry.
And you would invite her whenever she was ready. Hey, anytime you’re ready. You can write down something you’re grateful for and add it into the bowl.
A lot of families like. Right. What they’re grateful for on leaves are on bowls and they’re keeping track of it somewhere. And I would just, if it was my daughter, I would just give her space and say in any time you feel like you can do that.
And I want you to give yourself that kind of love. That kind of space.
Because when you get there on your own, when we don’t force you to be grateful, It will feel so good. It will feel so real. It will feel healing. It will feel right.
And all of this doesn’t have to take a long time. It might take you a whole 10, 15 minutes to cycle through all the things I said in this episode.
But we just want it to.
Be natural and not forced.
And just know that God has patience with you. And he will sit with you. He wants to hear everything you have to say. He can handle it.
And then you’re going to get to the place where you say, all right, Lord, I will do this. I will carry all these crosses. They will be done. And thank you. Thank you for these things. I see them.
All right. My friends, I made something special for you. I am going to be releasing. A daily advent reflection on the Catholic mom, daily podcast. Silly if you’re not already following that, wherever you’re listening to this. Just type in Catholic mom daily. I do a daily, like five minute podcast. And so I’m going to be doing a reflection for everyday, for lent, and it’s going to be mapped to the daily readings. And it is going to be about. Bringing light into darkness. About taking those places where we feel like wounded or hopeless. Or stuck. And bringing the light of Christ into them.
And I think that that is what’s so special about Advent’s kind of this dark time of the year. And then as we get closer to the Lord, he brings the light.
And then I made a journal that goes with it. So if you want to go to Catholic mom com. Slash. Advent 2023. You can download this free journal. You can either just download the PDF and look at it digitally, but also I’m going to link. Uh, store that we’ve uploaded it to where you can order a physical copy.
And you can follow along this program. We’re calling it. Prepare your heart. I’m going to help you prepare your heart.
For the coming of Christ.
And it’s completely free and it’s a beautiful program and you can do it with your friends.
I just wanted to give you something really special for advent, that draws you closer. To the Lord and to who God is calling you to be. Because he doesn’t want you to be stressed. He doesn’t want you to feel guilty or pressure. He wants you to walk closely with him. And have peace. And that is the work that we do here.
And. That will be the result of this program. This prepare your heart advent journal. And these daily reflections. So Catholic mom, calm.com/advent 2023. And you can go grab that. I’m praying for you, my friend. Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you so much for listening and have a blessed day.

![Anxiety never comes from the Lord. So the second I feel that tightness show up in my chest, I already know something true about myself. I am thinking about my life in a way that God does not want me to think about it. Period. Because if I were thinking about it the way He wants me to, I would be at peace. This episode is one question I want you to start asking faster than you are asking it right now. Not "Lord, take this away," but "Lord, what do you want me to know about this?" About this toddler. About my husband. About my body. About this house. I asked Him something this morning and He said, "You already know. You just doubt what I have already told you." Ooh, burn, Lord. We talk about why we are not reaching for Him sooner (we do not actually believe we could be at peace all the time), the grace you have to ask for before He hands it to you, what Fulton Sheen was doing in basically every talk he ever gave, and why Daniel in the lions' den and Mary at the foot of the cross were both at peace. WHAT WE COVER IN THIS EPISODE: The micro moment prayer: the second you notice tightness, throw your hands up and say "Lord, I invite you into this. Come be with me right now." Why anxiety is information and not a verdict. It tells you your thinking is off, not that your life is off The real reason we do not run to Him faster: we have never met a person who is at peace all the time, so we quietly decided it is not available to us Eight out of ten minutes. You will lose it. The win is how fast you come back Feeling powerless is the worst feeling there is, and being able to stay calm in any situation is one of the most powerful You are not done when you hear the sentence. Your job is to practice it, or your brain will spiral right back in two hours The gifts of the Holy Spirit were designed to be asked for. Wisdom, counsel, knowledge, understanding, fortitude, fear of the Lord. Ask Being at peace does not mean being peaceful. It means receiving. It means "this is okay right now and I can handle it" The surprise pregnancy test, the teenager going through it, the adult child who left the Church. You can be at peace today, in that EPISODE TIMELINE: (estimated at 5-minute marks, no timestamps in the transcript, confirm against audio) [00:00] – Hope when you feel anxious, trapped, stuck or frozen, and inviting the Lord into the micro moment [05:00] – "Lord, what do you want me to know about this?" Why anxiety never comes from Him, and what Mary has to do with our unbelief [10:00] – Eight out of ten minutes, and why staying calm is the most powerful you will ever feel [15:00] – Cheeky Jesus, the sentences He actually gives me, and writing them down so I can practice them [20:00] – My real morning (I do not pray first thing), redirecting my brain, and asking for grace and the gifts of the Holy Spirit [25:00] – Fulton Sheen, the beatification, and why all his talks end the same way. ![I am team planning. I am team house systems. We teach it in the membership and it is the very first thing we tackle in the Catholic Mom Reset, because looking at your next 90 days and making a plan is genuinely a gift to your future self. But if you took all of it away tomorrow, dropped me in a different house in a different town with no idea what the next 90 days held, I would be okay. I could walk around and have peace. That is the part I want for you. A lot of women tell me they are type A planners. There is a healthy version of that. There is also a version that gets built in a childhood full of chaos you could not control, or in a home where performing well was how you got love and attention. Both of those grow up into a woman who plans beautifully, and one of them is holding on with an iron grip. This episode is how to tell which one you are running on, the five minute healing work that sets the grip down, and the sentence I said to a mom on a coaching call that changed her whole face. WHAT WE COVER IN THIS EPISODE: Why the plan is not what makes you feel calm (you make a plan, then you think "I have a plan," and the thought is what creates safety in your body) The two childhoods that produce a hyper-planner: chaos you had no control over, and love you had to earn by performing The difference between planning that feels light and playful and planning you believe you cannot survive without Abraham walking up the mountain and the Israelites who never got the itinerary, and what peace looked like for both Tolerating uncertainty is a capacity you can grow, the same way a kid grows from 37 seconds to a minute and a half underwater The five minute memory work I use, sitting in the theater with the Lord while He tells you the truth about what really happened What I told the mom who was afraid that moving every two years would rob her kids of roots and stability EPISODE TIMELINE: [00:00] – Why I wanted to do this episode, and why I am solidly team planning and team systems [05:00] – All brains hate uncertainty, the AI conversation nobody can predict, and the skill we can actually grow [10:00] – Your body feels your thinking, not your plan. The Israelites, and Abraham on the mountain [15:00] – The car breaks down. The husband's job might move you. How to answer your own brain [20:00] – Chaos versus performance, the grounded healthy version of you, and asking the Lord what we are doing today [25:00] – Bob Schuchts, inner child work, and revisiting a memory with Jesus in five minutes [30:00] – "You are their mom. You bring roots and stability everywhere you go." !["People love change. They just hate transition." I heard Matthew Kelly teach that years ago and I think about it every single August. Because right now I'm getting a hundred emails from the school, two of my boys walked out today in socks with giant holes in the heels, and there's a lunchbox in this house that will not zip. If your body is fritzing out over start dates and supply lists and shoe sizes, nothing has gone wrong. You're not in the change yet. You're in the transition, and I want to give you the exact words to say to your own brain while you're standing in the middle of it. Plus a summer update: our little red golden retriever, the sickness that took my husband down, walking in 87 degrees on purpose, 200 Fulton Sheen rosaries, and the press-on nails I just ordered off an internet ad. WHAT WE COVER IN THIS EPISODE: Why change and transition are two different things, and why the yucky feeling belongs to the transition and not to your decision What to tell your brain when it starts second-guessing (the feeling is bad, so the choice must be wrong) and why that's backwards Who you are in a transition is not who you're going to be, whether that's back-to-school or pregnancy or a move you didn't choose The two weeks plus two weeks rhythm I use: get ready, live it, evaluate at the end of the day, tweak, then settle into the change Giving equal air time, because your brain will spend all day on what could go wrong and about nine seconds on what you're excited about The folder-and-calendar hack that keeps the school email avalanche from hanging over you every hour of the day Looking for what was good in a hard season, even when the good thing is just the timing of it EPISODE TIMELINE: [00:00] – Mid-August, the nesting itch, and going from wild open summer to ordered fall [05:00] – Annie Avonlea, a sickness that hit everyone one at a time, and what was actually good about it [10:00] – Walking in the heat on purpose, France prep, and giving equal air time to the excitement [15:00] – Making Fulton Sheen rosaries, why moms need work that gets finished, and yes, the press-on nails [20:00] – "People love change. They just hate transition." The emails, the socks, the lunchbox that won't zip [25:00] – Talking to your brain in the transition, and the four weeks it actually takes to settle [30:00] – The email folder hack, and having peace today in the middle of all of it LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED: Join the Catholic Mom Reset: www.catholicmomcalm.com/reset Calm Catholic Kids: https://calmcatholickids.com Fulton Sheen beatification conference: https://fultonsheenconference.com/ CONNECT WITH STERLING JAQUITH ON INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/catholicmomcalm](https://catholicmomcalm.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/CMC_Podcast_Ep_271_11-1-300x300.png)
